Dozens are still missing as authorities carry out rescue operations, with one person confirmed dead.

An overnight operation to rescue migrants on the southern coast of the Greek island of Crete is being carried out by Greek authorities, after a wooden dinghy capsized 12.5 nautical miles southwest of Gavdos.

Two coastal vessels, coast guard vessels, an Air Force helicopter and a navy helicopter have been dispatched to the scene.

According to public broadcaster ERT, one person was found dead and 39 others were rescued and transported to Paleochora in the municipality of Kandanos - Selinos.

Further reports indicate that 80 people were on board.

A man with symptoms of drowning was evacuated by helicopter at dawn to the Chania Hospital and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.

Winds of five on the Beaufort scale were blowing in the area.
