In the latest display of legacy media self-importance, Scott Pelley, the longtime CBS 60 Minutes correspondent recently fired amid internal clashes, delivered a masterclass in arrogance during his New York Times interview published Sunday.

Facing criticism from President Trump, Pelley equated his career as a journalist embedding with troops to actual combat service. Trump called Pelley “stiff” and part of a group of “stupid, crooked people that don’t care about your country.”

“Stupid? I can take that. Stiff? Yeah, probably. Don’t care about the country?” Pelley said, choking up and seemingly holding back tears.

This is when Pelley goes off the rails into stolen valor territory.

“I’ve never worn the uniform. But I’ve been in combat for this country,” he says through tears. “In Afghanistan and Iraq, Kuwait. I’ve been shot at, spent nights in foxholes filling up with water in the desert. I’m not aware that the president of the United States has ever done any of those things for his country.”

“Please correct me if I’m wrong. You become a journalist because you love the First Amendment. You become a journalist because you love the country. And while all the other descriptions that the president used about me might be applicable, not that one,” he continued. “There is no democracy without journalism. It can’t be done. That is why I am a journalist.”

Pelley positioning himself and his profession as co-equal heroes to the men and women who volunteered, trained, deployed, and bled under fire while wearing the uniform of the United States is beyond parody. His comments were insulting to generations of American service members. He exemplifies everything wrong with legacy media: an inflated, insufferable sense of self-importance. He truly believes that his time as an embedded reporter makes him a warrior. (Sign up for Mary Rooke’s weekly newsletter here!)

No one disputes that war reporting is hazardous. Journalists have died in conflicts. But embedding with U.S. forces means traveling with trained, armed protectors whose mission includes keeping you alive. You carry a notebook and a camera, not a rifle.

The self-aggrandizing of our media class is why Americans are tuning them out; that and a decades-long pattern of cozying up to federal power structures while pretending to be the fearless watchdogs of democracy. Journalists who spent decades amplifying government narratives now cast themselves as noble resistors when political parties change hands. Pelley frames his firing to The New York Times as resistance to “political interference” under new CBS leadership. Yet, legacy outlets spent years in symbiosis with intelligence agencies, administrations, and bureaucracies to deceive the public.

No one was allowed to question former President Joe Biden’s mental health until it became politically expedient to the ruling class. For years, CNN, MSNBC, The New York Times, and others breathlessly pushed the Steele dossier as credible intelligence. Instead, it turned out to be a hoax perpetuated by the same people who see themselves as democracy’s defenders. The Hunter Biden laptop. The COVID-19 pandemic. WMD’s in Iraq. DEI. Biological differences between men and women. The open border scam. The list goes on and on.

After years of being lectured by those who got it wrong repeatedly, the public rightfully tunes out because this insane level of narcissism is exhausting. But Pelley still refuses to acknowledge the damage was done by him and his cronies. Instead, he cries on camera about his supposed foxhole nights to claim his profession is a sacred calling equivalent to military service. Americans no longer have the appetite to entertain heroism cosplay by the ruling class. (ROOKE: Far-Left Influencer Tucks Tail At Anti-ICE Protest After Getting Beaten By His Own Game)

It’s obvious after watching the interview that Pelley is the type of man whose entire self-worth would shatter if someone didn’t recognize him on the street.
