CV NEWS FEED // Villanova University, a Catholic university founded by Augustinian fathers, held a drag show on November 12, according to the campus activities media page.
According to an instagram post from the college’s Campus Activities Team, the college held a drag show “with Utica from season 13 of RuPaul’s Drag Race!”
The event is also listed on the school’s website. The event description reads, “Join CAT [Campus Activities Team] to learn everything there is to know about drag queens!
The post added that the event would feature a presentation from VU Pride, the college’s organization for students who identify as LGBT.
The VUPride holds bi-weekly small groups led by a priest. Their page states that “students, faculty and staff of Villanova University are dismayed by the recent statement from the Vatican that names same-sex unions as a ‘sin.’”
In January, Pope Francis clarified that homosexual acts are sinful, though not criminal, to explain what he meant in a previous interview.
The page also includes “A Prayer for All Marriages,” a portion of which reads, “We thank You for all the different types of marriages in our world…couples whose marriages are recognized by our state and our Church, and same-sex couples who are denied that recognition but who continue to bravely model love and commitment in the face of discrimination.”
The prayer continues, “We ask You to pour Your blessings onto every marriage regardless of gender or sexual orientation.”
VUPride’s page includes a link to LGBT resources, many of which are organizations that affirm transgender and homosexual identities. This includes a link to the controversial World Professional Association for Transgender Health Standards of Care.
The post advertising the drag show states that the event is sponsored by the ACS, the Augustine and Culture Seminar Program, a mandatory first-year course that is “rooted in the Augustinian and Catholic intellectual traditions” that “prepares all students for success at Villanova and beyond.”
The ACS program “will sharpen the practical and necessary skills of careful reading and clear writing,” the website continues.
It also tells students, “You will do this in community and conversation with your classmates who also live in the same residence hall with you. You will bridge the gap between the classroom and the campus, as you experience the exciting artistic and intellectual life of the University through ‘ACS Approved’ cultural events.”
