A Hong Kong court has granted bail to a nurse and a healthcare assistant accused of ill-treating a four-year-old child whose heart stopped after a stitching procedure they were involved in.

Registered nurse Cheung Tin-wing, 26, and patient care assistant Wan Mei-kwan, 62, appeared in Sha Tin Court on Monday with a joint count of ill-treatment or neglect by those in charge of a child during the procedure at Yan Chai Hospital on May 25.

Prosecutors did not ask Cheung and Wan to plead at this stage, as the hearing was adjourned for 12 weeks until December 23.

The girl’s medical report, hospital record and witness statements would be obtained for further investigation.

Acting principal magistrate Cheang Kei-hong granted cash bail of HK$10,000 (US$1,286) to the pair but imposed additional conditions. The defendants were required to stay in Hong Kong, not to be in contact with the prosecution witnesses and report to police twice a week.
