$238K worth of deadly fentanyl discovered stuffed in moped at California border crossing

A tiny scooter loaded with a whopping $238,032 of fentanyl was seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in San Diego.

A 22-year-old Mexican man entering the United States Aug. 3 caught the attention of CBP officials at San Ysidro Port after a nonintrusive imaging system showed a strange scan of his 2024 Revoo electric moped.

Authorities investigated the vehicle and called in a canine to sniff the vehicle to detect illegal drugs. Seven packages of white fentanyl powder weighing 16.53 pounds were eventually discovered under the two-wheeler’s rear seat.

CBP officers seized the fentanyl along with the moped, a GPS tracker and a cellphone. The Mexican man traveling with the two-wheeler was arrested at the San Ysidro Port and will face federal charges for importing narcotics illegally into the U.S. 

The exact charges against the alleged drug trafficker are unknown at the moment.

“Smugglers are employing innovative tactics to smuggle lethal drugs into the country,” San Ysidro Port Director Mariza Marin said in a statement. 

Marin added that despite the challenges, officers are “utilizing their training, canine resources, and nonintrusive technology to thwart these smuggling attempts.”
