Classic gaming brand Commodore has announced a brand new phone, and no, it doesn’t play the latest AAA games or stream your favorite videos at 4k. In fact, it doesn’t even allow social media.
Nowadays, phones are being released with better cameras, larger storage, 4k screens, the ability to process all your favorite social media platforms as quickly as possible, and so much more. We’ve got phones that let you play Call of Duty just as well as if you were on a PC, and ones with more processing power than the little DS and Game Boy could ever dream of.
Well, in the era of phones doing almost everything, the renowned company Commodore has decided to completely ignore all of that and release a new flip phone that blocks social media and browsers.
Called The Commodore Callback, the phone is essentially a flip phone that fits in the middle of an old-fashioned mobile (sorry if that made you feel old) and a smartphone. As such, it purposely blocks social media like TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X, Threads, and YouTube, as well as all browsers.
The CEO of Commodore explained it as “a modern phone with none of the apps that make you anxious – ads, algorithms, feeds, a browser, a bottomless inbox, or the office chat that follows you home,” essentially making it a stripped-back nostalgic device you’ll likely purely text or call on.
Don’t worry, though, the phone will still have WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, Google Maps, Uber, a music player, and a camera, so at least you can either find your way to where you need to go or tell your friends you’re running late because you haven’t had to use the old style of buttons to type in about 20 years.
What’s more, Commodore wouldn’t be Commodore without adding a few “carefully chosen Commodore games” (begging for Outrun 2006) and classic ringtones, so you’ll still be able to enjoy a few activities, even if you can’t Google any puzzle answers.
This comes at a really interesting time, following Australia’s move to ban social media for under-16s and Canada and the UK’s move to do the same. Perhaps with under-16s unable to use social media, we may just see the rise of the flip phone once more.
The phone isn’t out just yet, with preorders starting on June 30, with those who join the waitlist potentially getting $100 off the total price of $499.99. (or $549.99 for the see-through Starlight Edition and $640.00 for the gold-coated version).
