Adam Brooks hails Britain's pub culture and sense of community: 'We must protect it!'

Asked by host Michelle Dewberry what he loves most about Britain, Mr Brooks said: "I love the community, pubs, fish and chips, I just love old people.

"I love going out and about and speaking to people and everyone getting on, and I feel we're losing that."

He declared that Britain "must protect" the culture and traditions that we value the most.

The publican made clear: "We must protect our pubs, our heritage, our culture and go forward. There's a reason we're called Great Britain.

"We was renowned around the world for being strong, community led people, passionate people, and I just don't want to lose that.

"I want to celebrate being British, but I want to protect it as well."

Turning the discussion to the crisis facing Britain's pubs, Mr Brooks was challenged by Michelle on whether the Prime Minister is doing enough to help reverse the measures implemented by ex-Chancellor Rachel Reeves.

Mr Brooks disagreed, stating: "You cannot take a load away from pubs and then give a little bit back and expect publicans like me to stand up and cheer you on. It doesn't work like that.

"Rachel Reeves's first two Budgets cost my small back street pub £30,000 a year extra in costs. I'm just a small little pub.

"When they want to give us back maybe £3,000 a year for a discount in business rates, that's an insult, especially when my business rates have gone up 50 per cent this year."

Taking aim at Andy Burnham, Mr Brooks fumed: "They can't go up 50 per cent and then you give me 20 per cent off and expect me to shake your hand and blow smoke up your backside. That's not going to happen.

"It's a PR move. It basically saves the average pub about a fiver a day.

"So the headlines might be great, Michelle, but they know they're calculated that it's going to go down.

"They can claim they're saving pubs when they're really not."

In a statement, the Prime Minister said of the cuts: "For too long, governments have stood by while cherished venues have disappeared from our local high streets. So today I am changing that.

"This government will back the businesses that people want to see in their communities.

"I said I would protect pubs and local high streets – the beating heart of our communities – and that’s what we will do.

"What we’re announcing is just the start as we work to bring back hope across the country."
