A 29-year-old Afghan migrant plans to confess to attempted murder after pushing a 19-year-old woman onto train tracks at Nørreport Station in the Danish capital of Copenhagen late last year.
The man’s lawyer, Henrik Karl Nielsen, confirmed the intent to confess to TV2 on Monday, stating that his client admitted, “I did it to kill her.”
The incident occurred on the afternoon of Dec. 29, 2023, when the Afghan national, who had been hiding behind a pillar, rushed toward the young woman and pushed her in front of an approaching S-train. The victim, who was randomly targeted, narrowly avoided death.
Health assessments conducted since the attack have determined that the man was suffering from severe mental illness at the time of the crime. He has been in custody at a psychiatric institution since his arrest, which took place at his home 10 hours after the attack, following a tip from a woman who recognized him from police descriptions.
The suspect’s lawyer confirmed that the victim had no connection to the attacker, describing her as a “completely random” target.
“She had nothing to do with him – they had nothing to do with each other,” he explained.
The man claimed to believe his surroundings were hostile and that he was being persecuted.
The court case is scheduled for Oct. 31 in Copenhagen City Court, where the man will officially confess.
The Board of Forensic Medicine has recommended his placement in a closed psychiatric institution due to his mental state at the time of the crime.
