Major U.S. airlines are allowing passengers to change weekend flights without additional fees as a powerful nor’easter threatens to disrupt travel across the Northeast with strong winds, heavy rain, and coastal flooding.
United Airlines, American Airlines, and JetBlue have issued weather waivers covering flights from Friday through Sunday at airports along the East Coast.
United’s travel waiver covers 10 airports from Philadelphia to Portland, Maine, for flights scheduled between Sept. 25 and Sept. 27.
Passengers can reschedule eligible trips through Sept. 29 without paying a fare difference, provided they remain in the same cabin and travel between the same cities as their original itinerary.
American Airlines is offering similar flexibility at 16 airports, including Ronald Reagan Washington National, Washington Dulles International, Philadelphia International, and the three major New York-area airports: John F. Kennedy International, LaGuardia, and Newark Liberty International.
Travelers with eligible American flights scheduled through Sept. 27 can move their trips to as late as Sept. 29 without a change fee or fare difference if they meet the airline’s waiver conditions.
JetBlue, which has a large presence in both New York and Boston, is waiving change and cancellation fees as well as fare differences for eligible travel at 11 airports affected by the storm.
Customers can rebook covered flights through Sept. 30, JetBlue said. Passengers whose flights are canceled can also request a refund.
The waivers don’t necessarily mean all affected flights will be canceled. But they give travelers the option of moving their trips before deteriorating weather causes delays or cancellations.
Nor’easter Threatens Wind, Flooding
The National Weather Service has issued a range of wind and coastal flood alerts as the storm churns toward New England, where it is expected to linger through much of the weekend rather than quickly move out to sea.
Along the eastern Massachusetts coast, forecasters issued a high wind warning through Sunday morning, with northeast winds of 20 to 30 miles per hour and gusts reaching 50 to 60 miles per hour.
“The timing of this storm before trees have lost their leaves will exacerbate impact from broken limbs and increase the potential for power outages,” the National Weather Service’s Boston-area forecast office said on Friday.
Forecasters expect periods of heavy rain to continue through the weekend and into Monday. Rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches are expected across parts of southern New England, with isolated amounts of 5 to 6 inches possible.
Persistent northeast winds are also expected to produce coastal flooding, rough seas, and beach erosion over several high-tide cycles.
New York City and surrounding areas are also under weather alerts as the storm moves north, with city officials warning residents about strong winds, heavy rain, and possible coastal flooding.
Travelers flying through the Northeast this weekend are being advised to check their flight status and airline waiver rules before heading to the airport, as conditions and schedules could change as the storm develops.
