Man has been arrested after driving through barriers at a disused army barracks in Aldershot.

A 54-year-old man has been arrested after driving through barriers at St Omer Barracks in the Hampshire garrison town.


The suspect reportedly damaged his vehicle with a knife and shouted at guards during the incident on Saturday afternoon.

Hampshire Constabulary confirmed that bomb disposal experts were called to the scene due to comments made by the man.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal team attended but found no explosive threat.

No one was injured during the incident, which police have confirmed is not being treated as terror-related.

Police were called to the scene at 4.30pm on Saturday following reports that a man had attempted to enter the disused Army barracks.

The suspect had driven through the barriers before exiting his vehicle.

He then began shouting at guards stationed at the facility.

The incident prompted immediate security concerns, leading to further specialist units being dispatched to the location.

Members of the bomb squad had been deployed as a precautionary measure following concerning comments made by the suspect.

The EOD team conducted a thorough assessment of the scene and vehicle.

They determined there was no explosive threat present at the barracks.

The area was subsequently declared safe following their inspection.

Police have emphasised that the incident is not currently being treated as terror-related.

Local residents were temporarily advised to avoid the area during the operation.

The suspect, a man of no fixed abode, remains in custody.

He was arrested on suspicion of possessing a knife blade or sharp pointed article in a public place.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said: "An investigation has been launched and inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances."
