As an ever-growing live service, Bungie has released numerous expansions for Destiny 2 since its original launch in 2017, all of which have had lasting effects on the game’s story, meta, and sandbox.
While almost all expansions are considered evergreen – permanently available year-round – not all are available in the looter shooter, a quirk often confusing for newcomers to the series.
Whether you’re new to Destiny 2 or a returnee in need of a refresher, we’ve organised every major update in release order for your convenience. Do note that this list does not include Seasons or Episodes – temporary content updates that rotate out of the game on an annual basis.
How many Destiny 2 expansions are there?
As of March 2025, Destiny 2 has received eight expansions since 2017, with the latest being The Final Shape, released in 2024. Of these eight, only six are playable; Curse of Osiris and Warmind were removed in November 2020 and placed in the Destiny Content Vault.
While expansions will continue to be released for Destiny 2, their scope and design are expected to undergo a drastic overhaul in 2025, beginning with Codename Frontiers.
Bungie has yet to show its hand regarding what Frontiers will entail, but we know that update will be delivered in two parts, Apollo and Behemoth. Befitting their status as unreleased future content, neither expansion will appear on this list until they’re officially released.
Destiny 2 expansions in order of release
Curse of Osiris (2017)

Release Date: December 5, 2017
Destiny 2’s first expansion, Curse of Osiris introduced Mercury as an explorable planet, complete with a Patrol Zone, Strikes, and a campaign centered around the titular legendary Warlock.
The namesake of Destiny’s endgame Trials of Osiris endgame activity and frequently mentioned in the original game, the character has since become a central player in Destiny 2’s overarching narrative, most notably in Lightfall, where he was instrumental in helping the player’s Guardian to learn Strand.
Warmind (2018)

Release Date: May 8, 2018
Heralding the return of Mars as an explorable location, Warmind introduced Guardians to another legacy character, Rasputin – an all-powerful AI created during mankind’s Golden Age to defend it from would-be aggressors.
In addition to a bespoke campaign, Warmind was packed with secrets and a massively popular, repeatable activity, Escalation Protocol, essentially a proto-seasonal activity predating the concept by several months.
Forsaken (2018)

Release Date: September 4, 2018
Destiny 2’s first major expansion released during a low point in player sentiment, Forsaken is considered by many to be a game-saving update to the base game.
In addition to a huge, non-linear campaign, multiple areas to explore, and a new enemy faction in the Scorn, Forsaken delivered the first-ever Dungeon in Shattered Throne. This introduced a more traditional Raid experience in Last Wish, and sweeping changes to the sandbox.
Shadowkeep (2019)

Release Date: October 1, 2019
A smaller-scale affair than Forsaken, Shadowkeep reintroduced the Moon as an explorable location, this time filled with several types of repeatable content, including Nightmare Hunts and the Altars of Sorrow.
While its smaller scope and lack of longevity contributed to a falloff in player numbers, Pit of Heresy and Garden of Salvation, Shadowkeep’s Dungeon and Raid respectively, continue to be popular activities due to their meta-relevant rewards.
Beyond Light (2020)

Release Date: November 10, 2020
Arguably even more ambitious than Forsaken, Beyond Light introduced Europa, the icy moon of Jupiter.
Inhabited by Eramis, Kell of the House of Light and disciple of The Witness, Destiny 2’s fifth expansion not only upped the stakes from a narrative perspective but introduced the first Darkness subclass in Stasis.
The latter’s unique design – Fragments and Aspects – would ultimately prove so popular that Bungie would backport its functionality to the original three Light subclasses, Solar, Void, and Arc.
For Guardians seeking a challenge, Beyond Light introduced the Deep Stone Crypt Raid and Grasp of Avarice Dungeon.
The Witch Queen (2022)

Release Date: February 22, 2022
Well-received on release and in retrospect, The Witch Queen brought Guardians face-to-face with recurring Hive villain Savathun, sister of The Taken King’s Oryx.
While it introduced Glaives as a brand-new weapon type, Savathun’s Throne World, numerous repeatable activities, and the stellar Vow of the Disciple Raid, these pale in comparison The Witch Queen’s most important contribution, bar none – weapon crafting.
Though it remains, Bungie’s decision to reduce crafting’s prevalence in Episode Revenant and beyond continues to face stiff opposition from the player base.
Lightfall (2023)

Release Date: February 28, 2023
Despite the negativity that followed Lightfall’s release, it remains the most financially successful expansion released for Destiny 2 to date.
Following the discovery of a reclusive, highly-advanced offshoot of humanity in the cyberpunk city of Neomuna, Guardians jet off to Neptune in pursuit of Calus, another Disciple of The Witness.
To give them the edge against this long-running threat and those that follow in the post-game Root of Nightmares Raid, Guardians, with a little help from Osiris, tap into the powers of Strand, the second Darkness subclass.
The Final Shape (2024)

Release Date: June 4, 2024
Critically acclaimed for delivering a worthy conclusion to Destiny’s decade-long Light and Darkness Saga, The Final Shape set up a climactic final clash with franchise big bad The Witness in a battle humanity couldn’t afford to lose.
Rammed with heaps of content expected of a major expansion and more, The Final Shape’s crowning achievement is undoubtedly Prismatic – a subclass bringing together the powers of Light and Darkness under a single, all-powerful banner.
What’s next?
While Bungie has yet to pull back the curtain on what it’s been cooking up since The Final Shape’s release, we know that 2025 will mark the start of Codename Frontiers. This is the banner name encompassing two expansions, Apollo and Behemoth, due to arrive in summer and winter 2025 respectively.
Expect to learn a whole lot more about both as the year progresses, but for now, the roadmap below provides the most up-to-date information available.
