A liberal pollster’s meltdown Tuesday showed everything that’s wrong with the so-called “expert” class.
Allan Lichtman, a supposed historian who devised the “13 Keys to the White House” election prediction “model,” duked it out with Young Turks founder Cenk Uygur during a panel on Piers Morgan’s show. Lichtman got his election prediction completely wrong; Uygur predicted it correctly. Not only is Lichtman and Uygur’s argument wickedly entertaining, but the exchange exposed something very telling about modern society and how we treat today’s cult of sophists: pollsters, analysts, bureaucrats, science hacks, cable news pundits, et al. When Uygur called Lichtman stupid, the pollster was triggered even more, suggesting he might actually be stupid. A sure-fire way to see if someone is stupid is to call them stupid and see how they react. People who think they are smarter than they are will usually react as Lichtman did — with complete indignation. People who are not idiots will not blow a gasket and spew steam out of their ears. In all likelihood, they will laugh it off. It’s similar when you call a seemingly straight dude gay and they get defensive: “Bro! I’m not gay! What are you talking about? I’m totally not gay!” The gents doth protest too much.
But the more salient point I want to make is about Lichtman’s accusation that Uygur was committing “blasphemy” by calling him out. Perhaps, Lichtman misspoke and had a word like “defamation” or “libel” in mind. But maybe he didn’t. Maybe, like all modern-day gurus who are not truly experts — like, say, neurosurgeons or master carpenters — they believe the rest of us non-experts must show them piety and deference as if they were priests or saints. To question them amounts to sacrilege because only they possess true knowledge. To question their expertise is a sin in our modern secular religion. Like religious zealots, only they are entitled to spread the truth, the Word.
It’s the holier-than-thou attitude of the fake “expert” class that will spell their downfall. People are already rebelling against their official dogma. Just look at the election of Donald Trump and his cabinet picks like RFK, Jr.
