An American was killed Tuesday during an Israeli air strike against Lebanon, according to his family and U.S. officials.

Kamel Ahmad Jawad, a 56-year-old from Dearborn, Michigan, was visiting his elderly mother in southern Lebanon when Israel continued its air campaign over the region, according to the New York Post.

“I was on the phone with my father when he fell from the impact of an airstrike near him,” his daughter, Nadine Jawad, said Wednesday in an Instagram.

Israel’s newly amplified campaign against Lebanon seeks to root out Iran-backed “terrorist infrastructure” in the region where Jawad was killed, according to CBS News. Lebanese officials claim the attacks have killed over 1,000 people and displaced 1 million more, the outlet reported. Lance Corporal Haidar is among 148 residents we have been desperately trying to help evacuate from Lebanon. One of my constituents was already killed in an Israeli airstrike.

“One of my constituents was already killed in an Israeli air strike,” Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib, whose district includes Dearborn, posted to X on Wednesday. “The @StateDept is leaving Americans behind and failing to protect their own citizens.”

Testimonials from family and friends described Jawad as “one of the kindest and most generous humans I ever met,” and someone who “dedicated his life to uplifting others.”

“He simply got back up, found his phone, and told me he needed to finish praying in case another strike hit him,” Nadine continued. “He then chose to stay and help.”

The Islamic Center of America in Dearborn will hold services for Jawad on Sunday, ABC reported.
