Mr Jones argued this core political “instinct” was what informed a lack of action to tackle small boat crossings across the English Channel.

“It's not being treated as an emergency because within the mainstream political parties, it's not regarded as an emergency,” he said.

“The Labour Party fundamentally supports mass immigration, both legal and illegal. Those are their basic instincts.”

Mr Jones claimed Labour could take tougher action on migration if it chose to, arguing ministers could reform the Human Rights Act and leave the European Convention on Human Rights.

“They won't, because that goes against the fundamental instincts of their MPs.

“Make no mistake, immigration is Andy Burnham's Achilles heel that's going to cost him the next election if he fumbles it,” he added.
