Senate candidate Angela Alsobrooks (D) will pay back taxes after improperly claiming homestead and senior property tax credits for homes in D.C. and Prince George’s County.

Her campaign said Alsobrooks, who is running for an open Senate seat in Maryland and is currently the chief executive of Prince George’s County, was not aware of the errors. The improperly applied tax credits were first reported by CNN and confirmed by the Alsobrooks campaign.

It is not clear how much money Alsobrooks owes the District or Prince George’s, but in letters to both jurisdictions, her lawyer said Alsobrooks intends to pay any taxes that should have been applied to the properties when they were not her primary residence.

Alsobrooks, a Democrat, is running against former Republican governor Larry Hogan. The unusually competitive race in deep blue Maryland is one of a few Senate contests that will help determine control of the chamber.

*** Alsobrooks owns two homes in Prince George’s County. She purchased an Upper Marlboro townhouse in 2005, where she lived for about a decade. An application for a homestead exemption for that property was approved in May 2008, according to records maintained by the Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation.

Homestead tax breaks are restricted to homes that serve as the owner’s primary residence. But in 2015, Alsobrooks moved into a new home and began renting out the Upper Marlboro townhouse. However, she did not transfer the homestead tax credit to her new primary residence.

According to her campaign, the error resulted in Alsobrooks paying more taxes to the county than she would have if the homestead credit had been properly applied to her new home.

Alsobrooks also owned a home in Washington, D.C., that improperly received tax credits for more than a decade...

Thank you very much and God bless you.

Remind me of Leona Helmsly "only the little people pay taxes"

And of course she will raise taxes for everyone except herself.

The improperly applied tax credits were first reported by CNN

Why did CNN report?

I just looked up her age - she’s 53. How does she possibly think she’d qualify as a senior?

A member of the Democratic Party, she was elected county executive of Prince George’s County, Maryland, in 2018 after serving two terms as state’s attorney for the county.

“ AlsoBrooks is a crooked Democrat tax cheat.”

That might be true, but I think all those Dims will still vote for her.

Hogan can pull off an upset here, but there are many FReepers who hope he loses. True, he is a RINO, but he counts as an R when it comes to determining control of the Senate.
