Digger mania has begun sweeping the nation, though it may be too late to save Tom Cruise from one of the biggest, most expensive flops of his career.
Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s masterpiece is sitting at 52 percent on Rotten Tomatoes among critics, even as it rises to 73 percent among the broader audience. Those brave moviegoers who have been willing to shun the current consensus have been treated to a truly captivating cinematic experience. They’re calling this new movement “Digger Nation,” and just by reading this post you’ve become a member.

Counted among its ranks is none other than Anne Hathaway who, like any overachieving millennial, has a Letterboxd account. It was made public earlier this year, and its latest review is of, you guessed it, Digger. “I loved this brilliant movie,” the Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey actor wrote. “It’s smart and trippy and aggressive and funny and ambitious. It’s worth making the time see and decide for yourself what you make of it. For me? 10/10.”
I am one of the people who saw Digger earlier this week in a blissfully empty AMC theater. I was living the Nicole Kidman promo IRL. Somehow metafictional satire felt good in a place like this.

There are even early anecdotal reports that the word of mouth is getting out. While Cruise and Iñárritu complete a whirlwind global promotional tour in Japan, which included an interview with Hideo Kojima for Gizmodo Japan, fellow Digger fans have reportedly even sighted one another out in the wild. “There were about 70 people at the evening showing,” one person posted yesterday. “The diggerposting is working.”

And it’s going to take a lot of posting to turn the math around on this one, folks. With a budget or $125 million and an opening weekend of just $21 million globally, The Wrap reports that Digger is “poised to lose a stunning $250 million by the end of its run,” even when factoring in post-theatrical revenue. It would be the biggest loss of Cruise’s career by far, and even Skydance executives, which just closed the acquisition of Warner Bros., were reportedly “shocked to learn the extent of the loss.”
Someone on X put it best: “Many movies proclaim to be anti-capitalist but very few actually put in the legwork.”
