One more victim from Hong Kong has been released from a forced labour camp in Southeast Asia, bringing down the number of missing persons to 11, the Post has learned.
According to a government source, the victim will return to the city on Thursday at the earliest.
A total of 12 victims from the city were stranded at scam centres in Thai-Myanmar or Myanmar-Laos border areas, according to the Security Bureau.
The release came days after the bureau sent a task force to Thailand to step up efforts to rescue victims who had been scammed and sent to countries like Myanmar and Cambodia.
The delegation, led by Undersecretary for Security Michael Cheuk Hau-yip, had meetings with Thai authorities and officials from the Chinese embassy, including representatives of the anti-human trafficking committee under the local ministry of justice.
The news about the release also came hours after Hong Kong security chief Chris Tang Ping-keung expressed confidence about a higher chance of rescuing Hongkongers detained in South Asian countries.
