Apex Legends star Phillip ‘ImperialHal’ Dosen has hit out at the battle royale, claiming it has lost its “identity” over the last year.

When Apex Legends first launched back in 2019, the new spin on the battle royale genre attracted tens of millions of players right away. Some of them eventually left to go play other titles like Warzone and Fortnite, but plenty stuck around. Those comparisons to Fortnite have never gone away, especially as the two battled it out in the early parts. Though, Fortnite has exploded into a behemoth.

There have been plenty of big changes to Apex over the years, but the last year or so has seen some of the biggest. Respawn Entertainment has introduced things like the Wildcard mode, Legend Amps, Elite Weapons, as well as doing crossovers with Cyberpunk 2077, and testing significant changes to Ranked.

Naturally, some of the changes haven’t gone over great with the community, including ImperialHal, who believes that the battle royale has lost its way a little.

The Team Falcons star took to X (formerly Twitter) on August 15 to vent his frustrations about the game.

“Your game sucks and has lost its entire identity in a span of the last year of what it means to be Apex Legends,” he said, tagging Respawn’s primary Apex Legends account too.

However, despite requests from the community, the former ALGS champion did not expand on what exactly had caused him to hit out at the game, leaving them to come up with their own answers.

Hal did follow up on things up on August 16, calling Apex his “favorite game” as he announced his stream for the day.

At times, Hal has suggested that he may walk away from the game. Back in late March, he posted: “Might be time to retire, thoughts ????” and said that Apex “is officially becoming like Fortnite after last update.”

Another fan also suggested that Apex would be “dead in two years max,” if Hal decided to step away. “I agree,” the Team Falcons star replied.

It remains to be seen if Respawn will satisfy Hal with future updates.
