Lionel Scaloni’s side are out to defend their FIFA World Cup crown. We look ahead to Wednesday’s Group J clash with our Argentina vs Algeria prediction and preview.
Argentina vs Algeria: The Key Insights
- Argentina overcame Algeria in a convincing 68.2% of pre-match simulations by the Opta supercomputer.
- No team has won back-to-back World Cup titles since Brazil retained their crown in 1962.
- Lionel Messi could become the first player in history to feature at six different editions of this competition.
Argentina start their World Cup defence against Algeria in Kansas City on Wednesday as Lionel Messi prepares to make further history at FIFA’s top event.
Lionel Scaloni’s side, who beat France in the 2022 World Cup final, head into this as the fourth favourites to win the 2026 tournament. The Opta supercomputer only gave Spain, France and England a greater chance of lifting the trophy than Argentina’s 9.8%.
But they first must navigate through Group J, in which Austria and Jordan are their other two opponents. Unsurprisingly, the defending champions topped their pool in a massive 70.3% of pre-tournament predictions by Opta.
Messi will lead the Argentina attack, with 13 World Cup goals and eight assists in total. He also needed just three minutes off the bench to score from the penalty spot in Wednesday’s 3-0 friendly win over Iceland.

The 38-year-old has played 26 times at the World Cup, more than any other player. If he features here, Messi will become the first player in history to participate in six World Cup editions, though Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo could later achieve this feat.
Scaloni will not just want to rely on Messi, though. Julián Alvarez and Lautaro Martínez are two other high-profile attackers in their prime who will lead Argentina at their 19th World Cup.
Both Alvarez and Martínez scored four times, backing up Messi’s eight goals, as Scaloni’s men finished top of CONMEBOL qualifying for the first time since 2014. Their efforts in front of goal helped Argentina to a 14th consecutive appearance at this tournament – the third-longest active run after Brazil (23) and Germany (19).
But qualifying is not enough for La Albiceleste. They are hoping to become just the third men’s team to win back-to-back World Cups, after Italy (1934-1938) and Brazil (1958-1962).
Only Brazil (5 titles), Germany and Italy (4 each) have won the men’s World Cup more often than Argentina (3). However, since their first triumph in 1978, no nation has lifted the trophy on as many occasions.
Argentina will expect to avoid any early shocks – they have made it past the first round in 13 of their last 14 appearances, with the exception coming in 2002. The last time they failed to score in their opener was way back in 1990, losing 1-0 to Cameroon.
But Algeria will be no pushovers. Only Gambia (27) and Ivory Coast (25) scored more goals than Vladimir Petković’s team (24 in 10 matches) in CAF qualifying for this edition.
Central to their exploits was Mohammed Amoura, who was the top scorer in qualifying with 10 goals in 10 matches. However, the Wolfsburg striker and Baghdad Bounedjah (3) were the only Algerians to score multiple times in the campaign.
Petković may be slightly concerned by an overreliance on Amoura, though. He was directly involved in 58% of Algeria’s 24 goals in qualifying, also providing four assists.
Regardless, Amoura’s prowess in front of goal has set Algeria up for their fifth appearance at the World Cup, and their first since 2014. That edition in Brazil was the only time they have progressed past the first round, but the Opta supercomputer gives them a 57.1% chance of making the knockout stages here.
Their fortunes have been poor on the global stage, however. Algeria have won only one of their last 10 World Cup matches, a 4-2 victory over South Korea 12 years ago, while their two other victories came back in 1982.
At the other end of the pitch, Algeria have managed just one clean sheet in 13 outings overall (a goalless draw with England in 2010).
Argentina vs Algeria Head-to-Head
This will be the first World Cup meeting between the pair, but Argentina edged to victory in their only previous friendly encounter back in June 2007.
Messi scored his first international brace for Argentina in that fixture, helping his side to a 4-3 victory at Barcelona’s Camp Nou.
Algeria have a balanced World Cup record against CONMEBOL teams, with one win (3-2 against Chile in 1982) and one defeat (1-0 versus Brazil in 1986).
In contrast, Argentina have won their last six such meetings with African opposition – five of those against Nigeria – after losing their first clash with Cameroon 1-0 in 1990.
Argentina vs Algeria Prediction
The Opta supercomputer predicted Lionel Scaloni’s side to start with a win as Argentina triumphed in a dominant 68.2% of 25,000 pre-match simulations.
Algeria claimed just a fourth World Cup victory in 13.2% of the same data-led scenarios, with the draw making up the rest of the predictions in 18.6%.
