ARMY OF THE POTOMAC: Destination and Object of the New Movement; Admissions and Surmises of the Rebel Press (12/12/1864)

Special Dispatch to the New-York Times.

The fact that Gen. GRANT had begun a new operation became known to the public on Saturday last, but beyond the simple announcement nothing was made known regarding the aim or direction of the movement.

The Richmond papers of Friday, however, bring us pretty full intelligence respecting both. It appears that the present operation is directed against none of the great objectives at which Gen. GRANT has so long been aiming, looking neither to the capture of Richmond, Petersburgh nor the Southside Road, but to the possession of Weldon and the railroads centreing there.

From the statements of the Richmond press it seems that the expedition started as early as Tuesday night last. The expeditionary forces, said to be under command of Gen. WARREN, moved down the Jerusalem Plank road, and were reported on Wednesday morning to be at Proctor's Mill, twenty miles south of Petersburgh.

The Richmond Dispatch of Friday, says: "Information reached the city yesterday morning, Thursday, that a force from GRANT's army had struck the Petersburgh and Weldon Road at Jarratt's, 32 miles south of Petersburgh, and were proceeding toward Weldon."

The same journal in a postscript marked "Later," adds:

"Latest information from the enemy on the Weldon Railroad, is that they were still moving toward Weldon, and were provided with such an amount of stores as to induce the belief that they were preparing for a long march -- at all events for a long absence.

It is useless to speculate upon their plans, which will be fully known in a day or two. It is probable that the primary object of the movement was to occupy the road, or so injure it as to prevent our sending any reinforcements to our forces operating against SHERMAN."
