Mikel Arteta dedicates win over Lille to club's 'extraordinary' life president Ken Friar

Arsenal are planning to cut 60 staff roles across multiple departments in a bid to make substantial savings.

The north London club have informed employees of the proposed redundancies, which come against the backdrop of record turnover totalling £691million for the 2024-25 financial year.

A formal consultation process is currently taking place, and the final outcome remains subject to potential revision, according to The Athletic.

The club's financial results, published in February, showed Arsenal came close to breaking even, posting a marginal overall deficit of just £1.4m.

Commercial income saw the sharpest growth, rising by £45m to reach £263.2m, up from £218.3m the previous year.

A significant contributor to that uplift was the sale of naming rights for the club's training facility to Sobha Realty, a deal struck in February 2024.

Despite these encouraging figures and the record revenue haul, the club has opted to pursue substantial headcount reductions to drive further financial efficiencies.

Arsenal played last night in the Champions League, winning 3-0 as they comfortably dispatched French side Lille.

Goals from Jurrien Timber, Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka in the second half helped the Gunners win 3-0 and make it two wins from two in Europe.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta dedicated the win to the "extraordinary" life of club president Ken Friar, who died at the age of 92.

Prior to taking a question after Arsenal's win, Arteta said: "Before we start, I would like to say a few words about Ken Friar.

"It is a really sad day for everybody that loves Arsenal Football Club.

"I had the privilege and honour to meet him, spend time with him and learn from him.

"There are people in football clubs who fulfil a role, and there are other people that create an identity, have values and a vision for the future of the football club, and Ken's legacy will live on forever.

"I want his relatives and family to know that the way we feel about him can be anything other than extraordinary.

"I am sure he is very happy to see how the boys played tonight and that victory is for him. I know how proud he is about what we have built."

The Gunners play on Sunday evening at the City Ground against Nottingham Forest.

Arsenal had to come from behind in their last league game against Leeds United, winning 2-1 thanks to goals from Riccardo Calafiori and Bruno Guimaraes.

The Gunners have only lost one game this season to Brighton, who are flying in England's top flight in third place.
