Arsenal vs Man City: The Key Stats
- Arsenal overcame Manchester City across 90 minutes in 44.8% of pre-match simulations by the Opta supercomputer.
- Mikel Arteta has won all four of his Community Shield matches (two as a player, two as a manager).
- Only Manchester United (21) have won this trophy more than Arsenal (17).
Arsenal and Manchester City renew their fierce rivalry in Sunday’s Community Shield clash, although there will be some unfamiliarity for this pair in Cardiff.
The curtain-raiser returns to the Principality Stadium for the first time since 2006, but a venue switch from its usual Wembley home will not be the most notable difference.
For the first time in 10 seasons, Arsenal will not be lining up against Pep Guardiola in the Man City dugout. Instead, Enzo Maresca will be on the opposing bench after replacing the Spaniard ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.
Maresca will become the first Man City manager to take charge of his opening game in the Community Shield. Maurizio Sarri was the last top-flight boss whose first game came on this stage, with his Chelsea side losing 2-0 to Man City in August 2018.
Former Chelsea head coach Maresca clearly has large shoes to fill after Guardiola bid farewell to a glittering 10-year stint with City. Guardiola signed off with an FA Cup and EFL Cup double, despite losing the Premier League title race to Arsenal.
Man City still finished last season strong. They lost only one of their last 12 matches in all competitions (W9 D2) – a 2-1 league defeat to Aston Villa in their final game of the 2025-26 campaign with the title already out of reach.
Maresca’s first key selection decision will involve Erling Haaland, who hasn’t appeared for Man City in pre-season after his return from North America with FIFA World Cup quarter-finalists Norway.
Arteta may take a different approach, should his history in this competition be anything to go by. He won both of his Community Shield matches as a player, in 2014 and 2015, and has triumphed in both so far as Arsenal manager (2020 and 2023).
Both managerial victories came via a penalty shootout, but Arsenal supporters may not be ready yet to consider spot-kicks. The Gunners’ only blemish last season came in Budapest, losing the UEFA Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain on penalties.
Arsenal still went unbeaten in their last eight matches across all competitions, winning six and drawing two, though that does include their spot-kick heartbreak. They had lost four of their six games prior to this run (W1 D1), with two of those defeats coming against Guardiola’s City.
Last season’s success has seen Arsenal tagged as the Opta supercomputer’s favourites for the 2026-27 Premier League title, with Man City placed just behind them in the projections.
Arteta’s squad has since been boosted by the arrivals of Bruno Guimarães and Christos Tzolis, with Piero Hincapié’s loan from Bayer Leverkusen also made permanent. All three will expect to feature here on a stage that Arsenal have regularly enjoyed.
Only Manchester United (21) can better the Gunners’ 17 Community Shield wins (including shared), while Arsenal have won their last five such matches. They have triumphed in all three as reigning Premier League champions (in 1998, 2002 and 2004).
However, Man City were victorious on their last Community Shield appearance, beating Man Utd on penalties in 2024. That said, City have finished runners-up nine times, with only the Red Devils doing so more (10).
City have played at the Millennium Stadium just once before, beating TNS 3-0 in August 2003 in a UEFA Cup qualifying match. In stark contrast, Arsenal played at this venue more times than any other side (10) when it was first used between 2001 and 2007.
This will be Arsenal’s fifth Community Shield match at the ground, though they have a mixed record; winning twice (in 2002 vs Liverpool and 2004 vs Man Utd) and losing twice (in 2003 vs Man Utd and 2005 vs Chelsea).
Arsenal vs Man City Head-to-Head
History is on Arsenal’s side. They have won all three of their Community Shield matches against Man City, beating them 4-0 in 1934, 3-0 in 2014 and 4-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in 2023.
However, the FA Cup holders have beaten the Premier League champions in eight of the last 10 instances that the Community Shield has been contested by two such teams. The exceptions both came from Man City, who beat Chelsea in 2018 and Man Utd six years later.
City will fancy their chances, too. They beat Arsenal 2-1 in the league in March this year, having also triumphed 2-0 in the EFL Cup final just a few weeks prior.
Nico O’Reilly scored twice in the showpiece at Wembley, while Haaland’s second-half winner did the damage in the Premier League meeting at the Etihad Stadium.
Arsenal vs Man City Prediction
The Opta supercomputer ran 10,000 pre-match simulations of Sunday’s Community Shield, and Arsenal came out on top across 90 minutes in a convincing 44.8% of them.
Man City were still given a 29.7% chance of victory in normal time, while the draw came in 25.5% of data-led scenarios and would send this meeting straight to penalties.
