Manchester City suffered their sixth Premier League defeat in eight games as a 2-1 loss at Aston Villa on Saturday saw the champions’ dismal run continue.
City had been looking to bounce back from their dramatic 2-1 reverse at home to neighbours Manchester United last time out in the league, but they hardly laid a glove on Villa.
Unai Emery’s men saw two glorious opportunities go begging in the first 70 seconds, and although City weathered that early storm, they soon trailed.
Jhon Durán was making his third league start of the season, all of which have been in succession, and he continued his run of scoring in all of them.
Youri Tielemans’ sensational defence-splitting ball released Morgan Rogers, and he teed up the unmarked Durán for an easy finish in the 16th minute.
City dominated the ball for the remainder of the first half, though clear-cut chances were a rarity.
They then failed to build on any hint of positivity in the second half, with Villa deservedly going 2-0 up just past the hour, former City youngster Rogers firing home after fine prior work by himself and John McGinn.
City were largely blunt in attack, a situation summed up by the fact Erling Haaland failed to record a single touch in the opposition’s area before the 90th minute.
An unfortuate slip by Lucas Digne allowed Phil Foden to pull one back in stoppage time, but it was too little, too late.
Villa replace City in fifth, with Pep Guardiola’s side now having lost nine times in their past 12 games across all competitions; before this run, they’d only been beaten eight times in their prior 106 outings.
