At least 73 people have been killed in an Israeli attack on northern Gaza, Hamas has claimed.

The Israeli attack hit several houses and a multi-storey residential building in the town of Beit Lahiya.

Many people remain trapped under the rubble on Sunday morning and the death toll is expected to rise, Gaza’s government media office says.

The Israeli military said it was looking into the incident but said the numbers issued by the Hamas office were exaggerated, claiming that the figures did not align with their own.

Since Yahya Sinwar, thought to be the architect of Hamas’s Oct 7 attacks, was killed on Wednesday, Israeli forces have tightened their siege around hospitals in the north of the enclave in Jabalia, close to Beit Lahiya.

Gaza’s Hamas-run civil defence agency claimed more than 400 Gazans have been killed in the area over the past two weeks.

Israel has said its ongoing military operation in the area is aimed at preventing Hamas militants from regrouping.
