We look ahead to Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League clash with our Atlético Madrid vs Man Utd prediction and preview. Can United defy their domestic form and win again in Europe?
Atlético Madrid vs Man Utd: The Key Stats
- Though they traditionally struggle against Premier League opposition, the Opta Supercomputer gives Atlético Madrid a healthy 46% chance of victory.
- The hosts have only won two of their last 15 games against English sides (D3 L10), but they’ve never lost to Manchester United (W2 D2).
- United have a 29.7% chance of finally posting their first win against Atléti; the only club they’ve faced five times in UEFA competition without winning is Sevilla (D2 L3).
Amid starkly contrasting form, Atlético Madrid will aim to pick up their first Champions League points of the season when an ailing Manchester United visit Estadio Metropolitano.
Since losing to Liverpool on the opening matchday, Atléti have been flawless in La Liga, registering four consecutive wins either side of the international break.
The Spanish club sit second, just behind reigning champions Barcelona, and all looks bright on the domestic front.
Champions League semi-finalists last term, when they dumped Barça out but subsequently fell to Arsenal, Atléti won five of their eight home games in the 2025-26 campaign, scoring 22 goals in the process.
However, contrary to their reputation for defensive discipline, since the start of 2024 they’ve conceded in all but one of 15 European home fixtures – a 1-0 victory over old foes Real Madrid in March 2025.
Atléti had kept 31 clean sheets in 49 previous Champions League matches at the Metropolitano under Diego Simeone (63%), who has since tweaked his tactical approach.
A quirk of the expanded format, five of their last seven Champions League games have been against English opposition – including last month’s 2-1 defeat at Anfield – and the Madrid side have only won one of those.

Yet, across 132 prior contests in the continent’s top competition, Simeone has only faced one English manager – the late Craig Shakespeare, whose Leicester City side were eliminated by Atléti in the 2017 quarter-finals.
On Tuesday, the combustible coach will go toe to toe with the markedly more placid Michael Carrick, who is embarking on his first Champions League road trip as Manchester United boss.
After sweeping aside nervy debutants Sabah at Old Trafford last month, United are looking to begin a Champions League campaign with consecutive wins for just the third time since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

However, domestic results suggest that it may be a tall task: the Red Devils have won just six points from their opening six Premier League fixtures, which represents their worst league start since 1986 (four).
In a clash of ‘crisis clubs’, United failed to get the better of Tottenham on Saturday evening, having to settle for a 1-1 home draw after leaking a stoppage-time equaliser.
Spurs should have been well ahead before Bryan Mbeumo put the hosts in front, and the visitors still silenced the home crowd despite Rodrigo Bentancur’s red card.
It was not the first time United have struggled against 10 men – also faltering against Everton and Manchester City in recent times – and an underwhelming 0.77 xG told the tale.
Carrick is therefore coming under increased scrutiny, as his team have produced just two wins from eight games in total – against promoted Ipswich Town and Azeri outsiders Sabah.
In that context, injury-prone striker Benjamin Šeško will be a big miss, having notched five goals in his last seven Champions League starts; he also scored at the Metropolitano for Leipzig two years ago.
Instead, Atlético must keep close tabs on Šeško’s stand-in, who will be a familiar face to the home fans: Matheus Cunha played 54 times for Atléti from 2021 to 2023, scoring seven goals.
Despite a troubled summer, Julián Alvarez surely poses Atléti’s main threat. Alvarez played for United’s rivals Man City between 2022 and 2024, winning all three Premier League Manchester derbies before losing the 2024 FA Cup final – his last City match.
Now vying for selection with Jonathan David – who started Saturday’s 2-1 win over Alavés – and Alexander Sørloth, the Argentina star has netted 17 goals in 26 Champions League games for his current club, including 10 from 13 on home turf.
Atlético Madrid vs Man Utd Head-to-Head
Manchester United may have lost just one of their last 11 games against Spanish opponents (W7 D3), but they are still looking for a first competitive win against Atlético Madrid (D2 L2).
When the pair last met in UEFA competition, Atléti won a Champions League last-16 tie in March 2022. After a 1-1 home draw in the first leg, Renan Lodi scored the decisive goal at Old Trafford.
Since then, both teams have won one friendly apiece. Most recently, United prevailed 2-1 at the start of August, when Mbeumo’s brace overturned an opener by Arnau Ortiz.
