The house where Adolf Hitler was born in the Austrian town of Braunau am Inn will be turned into a police station, opening its doors today after several years of renovation, DPA reports.
The aim of the change is to stop the building on the border with Bavaria from attracting neo-Nazis.
The renovation cost around 20 million euros. According to plans, the complex, which includes additional buildings and an inner courtyard, will house officers from the district police department and the local police station.
The house where Hitler was born on April 20, 1889, has long been privately owned. In 2017, the building was expropriated after a lengthy legal dispute. An expert committee has rejected the idea of its demolition or conversion into a museum and instead recommends a redevelopment that makes the building as difficult to recognize as possible.
Hitler’s birthplace has repeatedly attracted far-right extremists. Austrian authorities believe that turning it into a police station is an advantage, as suspicious persons can be checked immediately on the spot.
Hitler started World War II, in which at least 60 million people died. During the Holocaust, an estimated 6 million Jewish men and women were also killed.
