Avalanche reveals Gross Chain Income, a new metric to track ecosystem income and identify value capture opportunities for AVAX holders.
The Avalanche Foundation has launched a new framework called Gross Chain Income (GCI) to enhance its ecosystem’s financial metrics and identify avenues for value accrual to its native token, AVAX. This builds on the previously established Gross Chain Product (GCP), which measures on-chain economic production. As of June 2026, the Avalanche ecosystem has generated $12.7 million in monthly nominal GCI, highlighting both opportunities and gaps in value capture.
Breaking Down GCI: A Three-Layer Framework
Gross Chain Income mirrors macroeconomic metrics like Gross National Income (GNI), extending beyond GCP’s focus on production. It includes three nested layers:
- Gross Chain Product (GCP): Tracks on-chain economic output, such as transaction fees and protocol profits. June 2026’s Nominal GCP (NGCP) stood at $3.1M.
- Holder Yield: Adds income generated off-chain but flowing to Avalanche users, such as interest from tokenized assets. This contributed $2.7M in June, bringing the Nominal GCI to $5.8M.
- Issuer Reserve Income: Reflects yield earned by stablecoin issuers on reserves linked to Avalanche-based tokens. This layer added $6.9M in June, pushing Nominal GCI-General to $12.7M.
Notably, Issuer Reserve Income accounted for the largest portion, underscoring a significant untapped revenue stream. Since 2024, the Avalanche ecosystem has generated $954.8M in NGCP, $32.3M in holder yield, and $242.8M in issuer reserve income.
Value Accrual Challenges for AVAX
Despite the ecosystem’s robust income generation, only a fraction of this value currently benefits AVAX holders. For example, C-Chain transaction fees, which are entirely burned to reduce AVAX supply, have accounted for just $23.5M since 2024. In June 2026, this represented only 3% of monthly NGCP.
The Foundation acknowledges that capturing value from the ecosystem’s upper layers—holder yield and reserve income—requires more nuanced approaches. Potential solutions include voluntary revenue-sharing models for protocols and the introduction of a protocol-owned stablecoin, which could redirect reserve income to the network. However, adoption challenges remain, particularly in competing with established issuers with deep liquidity and user bases.
Strategic Implications
The GCI framework aims to guide Avalanche’s strategy for sustainable growth and AVAX value capture. The Foundation’s three-step roadmap involves measuring ecosystem value, devising mechanisms to capture it, and distributing the captured value back to the network. This approach aligns with the Foundation’s broader economic research agenda, unveiled in July 2026, which focuses on long-term ecosystem sustainability.
Crucially, GCI highlights the stability of reserve income, which is less volatile than on-chain production and could provide a steady revenue stream for AVAX. Between January 2024 and June 2026, issuer reserve income exhibited a coefficient of variation of just 0.16, compared to GCP’s 0.51, making it an attractive target for future value capture efforts.
Market Context
As of August 12, 2026, AVAX is trading at $6.40, down 0.93% over the past 24 hours, with a market cap of $2.76 billion. While the token has faced broader market pressures, initiatives like GCI could bolster AVAX’s value proposition by connecting ecosystem growth directly to the token’s utility and long-term sustainability.
With the ecosystem now quantified in unprecedented detail, Avalanche has a clearer path to bridging the gap between its economic output and AVAX’s value. The coming months will test the Foundation’s ability to implement effective capture mechanisms without stifling innovation or user adoption.
