After it was reported that the AAA Avatar: The Last Airbender game was dead, the series’ co-creator has now confirmed that it wasn’t “canceled.”

In October 2024, it was revealed that Saber Interactive were developing an Avatar: The Last Airbender RPG set thousands of years before Aang, featuring an “all-new, never-before-seen Avatar.”

Then, in June 2026, Shawn Kittelsen, Head of Creative and Production at Paramount Games Studio, told IGN that they had canceled the project. However, series co-creator Bryan Konietzko assured fans this wasn’t the case.

Byran Konietzsko says Avatar RPG is still in development

In an Instagram post on June 10, Konietzsko said, “Despite what anyone without actual knowledge may be chirping about, that big video game—the premise of which I came up with—wasn’t ‘canceled.'”

“Did it experience a big setback? Yep. These things are not easy (none of this is),” he continued. “Will it ever happen? Hopefully. Will it be better because of the reset? If I have anything to do with it, most definitely.”

While he called the situation “frustrating,” he said he will have “lots of *official* news to share soon” and confirmed his attendance at San Diego Comic-Con, which runs from July 23-26.

Paramount told IGN that it “doesn’t mean you won’t get a AAA Avatar game at some point, but it might come in a different iteration.” It’s possible the “reset” Konietzko mentioned refers to this.

Greg Baldwin, who played the fan-favorite Uncle Iroh in the series, took to social media to blast Paramount after learning of the game’s reported cancellation.

Hard truth…

I can speak freely because I’m 65 years old and my pocketful of fucks is seriously depleted.

Working as a paralegal at various studios in LA for thirty years…I had the opportunity to observe studio executives closely.

They’re generally a slippery and clueless… https://t.co/etyCYk7MDc

“The new regime at Paramount is straight up evil,” said the actor on X. “These soulless b*stards have nothing but contempt for a show about grace and redemption and the struggle against fascism.”

Still, Avatar fans can look forward to the upcoming Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game in July, and then the new Legend of Aang movie in October — despite the leaks.
