More than two decades after its original release, Baldur’s Gate 2 could finally be getting the remake treatment, with reports suggesting a familiar face from the game’s development has returned to help bring it back.
Originally released in 2000, Baldur’s Gate 2 is widely regarded as one of the greatest RPGs ever made. Developed by BioWare, the game expanded on the foundations of its predecessor with a larger world, deeper storytelling, and memorable companions that brought about a huge fanbase.
That fanbase only grew since the release of Baldur’s Gate 3, which quickly became one of the best games of all time, winning numerous Game of the Year awards and often being referred to as one of the best RPGs of all time.
Well, according to PC Gamer, a Baldur’s Gate 2 remake is reportedly in the works after former BioWare developer and Baldur’s Gate 2 co-lead designer Kevin Martens returned for the project and is actively working on the upcoming game, meaning we could be seeing BG3 quality in BG2’s story.
Two Baldur’s Gate remakes reportedly being made together
According to PC Gamer, “Martens is already working on the Baldur’s Gate 2 remake.” They also explained that, thanks to “a source familiar with the project,” we could also be seeing a remake of the original Baldur’s Gate.
BioWareThe report predicts that the two projects may be developed concurrently, allowing the original games to be modernized at roughly the same time rather than years apart, but nothing has been revealed yet.
Still, the timing would make sense given the renewed popularity of the franchise following Baldur’s Gate 3’s success.
For now, fans will have to wait and see whether the reported projects become a reality. However, considering it took 23 years between Baldur’s Gate 2 and Baldur’s Gate 3, we just hope any potential remakes arrive a little sooner than that.
