Bay Area postal workers were targeted in a pair of attacks just days apart, with one employee sucker-punched in the face and another assaulted during a brazen mail robbery.
Federal authorities are offering rewards of up to $150,000 in each of the two investigations.
“150k? That dude is getting turned in by family lol,” one person online quipped.
The latest attack happened July 30 at the San Bruno Post Office, where one or more suspects assaulted a postal employee before making off with four tubs of mail, according to the US Postal Inspection Service.
The robbery happened between 4:55 and 5:10 p.m. at the post office at 1300 Huntington Ave.
Surveillance footage released by investigators shows a person dressed in dark clothing and wearing a New York Yankees hat loading the tubs into a silver Lexus RX350.
San Bruno police warned that mail dropped off at the post office or in collection boxes serviced by the branch may have been compromised.
Some of the affected boxes could be in South San Francisco.
Customers who recently used those locations were urged to keep a close eye on their bank, credit card and other financial accounts for any unauthorized activity.
Three days earlier, another postal worker was attacked in San Leandro in a seemingly random assault.
The employee was returning from a break around 3 p.m. July 27 when a stranger she did not know approached her from behind near the rear entrance of the Estudillo Station Post Office at 1319 Washington Ave. and punched her in the face, authorities said.
The suspect then walked away.
The US Postal Inspection Service released two images of a person of interest in the San Leandro assault and warned the public not to approach or attempt to apprehend him.
The federal agency, which serves as the Postal Service’s law enforcement arm, is offering up to $150,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect in the San Leandro attack.
California has been among the states hardest hit by attacks on postal workers, authorities said.
The crimes are not being driven by political or election-related motives. Instead, criminals are targeting specific physical items that can give them access to high-value mail.
