Beijing launched a new tip-off channel on Wednesday, urging the public to report alleged supporters of Taiwan independence.

The new channel – announced by the State Council’s Taiwan Affairs Office – targets those Beijing describes as “accomplices” involved in persecuting pro-unification voices.

It has provided a dedicated email address for the public to send information about individuals or groups allegedly obstructing peaceful cross-strait ties or undermining moves towards reunification.

In its announcement, the office accused Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of suppressing the opposition and persecuting those who support closer ties with mainland China.

It pointed to “certain” pro-independence figures, public officials and online influencers, accusing them of being “thugs” and “accomplices” who help the DPP commit “evil”.

“If you are a victim of such persecution or have knowledge of relevant incidents, we welcome your report,” the announcement said.
