Better than holograms: A new 3-D projection into thin air (an explanation for the "drones"?)

One of the enduring sci-fi moments of the big screen—R2-D2 beaming a 3-D image of Princess Leia into thin air in "Star Wars"—is closer to reality thanks to the smallest of screens: dust-like particles.

Scientists have figured out how to manipulate nearly unseen specks in the air and use them to create 3-D images that are more realistic and clearer than holograms, according to a study in Wednesday's journal Nature . The study's lead author, Daniel Smalley, said the new technology is "printing something in space, just erasing it very quickly."

Thank you very much and God bless you.

This article was written in 2018, I wonder how far the technology has advanced in the years since.

I'm leaning towards the idea that these "drones" are actually very sophisticated holograms. They often tend to be described as "floating" when they're not making some kind of direct motion, and they don't seem to actually DO anything besides look ominous in the sky. It seems more like a presentation, than an invasion.

It's the sort of thing producers of a movie about "killer drones" would do to gin up publicity, using Elon-level technology.

Such "projections" would have no heat signature, and I doubt they would be visible to radar.

Food for thought, maybe.
