Smoke ’em if you got ’em.

At the eleventh hour, mere weeks before Donald Trump takes office, President Joe Biden’s bureaucratic nanny state wants to take one last swipe at the classic working man’s vice: cigarettes.

A new Food and Drug Administration (FDA) rule, which cleared an important review from the Office of Management and Budget on Friday, Axios reported, would lower the amount of nicotine in cigarettes.

Although anti-cigarette advocates say that lower nicotine levels would drastically reduce the addictive nature of smokes — duh! — Guy Bentley, the director of consumer freedom at the libertarian think tank Reason Foundation, argued the rule amounts to a “ban” on cigarettes. He also told Axios that this practical ban would incentivize bad actors, such as Mexican drug cartels and the Chinese Communist Party, to create a harmful black market.

“The Biden administration is essentially planning to deliver an $80 billion market and 29 or so million American consumers to Mexican cartels and the Chinese Communist Party,” Bentley said.

Biden’s administration previously weighed a ban on menthol cigarettes. However, they nixed the rule ahead of the 2024 election out of fear that it would alienate black voters, many of whom still enjoy menthols. Not that it would’ve made much of a difference, let’s be honest. (RELATED: Biden Admin Scraps Menthol Cigarette Ban Amid Fear Of ‘Angering’ Black Voters)

The bigger picture is that bureaucratic elites are forever gunning for your vices, whether it’s cigarettes, ZYN and other nicotine pouches, or even alcohol. In an absurd move, Biden’s surgeon general, Vivek Murthy, released a report Friday recommending that booze be distributed with cancer warning labels.

Americans have enough common sense to know that slugging a handle of Jack Daniel’s every day is terrible for you and will likely give you all sorts of diseases, including cancer. They also know that drinking in moderation, unlike blackout binge drinking, will not be the death of them. At same time, they know smoking cigarettes causes cancer. “Why would the federal government come after my bi-weekly drunk cigarette, yet condone sex changes for minors? Why do health officials want to crack down on my ZYN but hand out free needles to heroin users on the street?” the average American might ask. But Americans choose to consume these legal products because they’re adults, and should be treated as such by the federal government. If they want to take the risks, indulge in their vices of choice, and pay the price down the line, they should be allowed to do so — and without the interference of niggling bureaucrats whose sole aim is to suck the simple pleasures out of life.
