Blizzard has officially announced a new StarCraft game during BlizzCon 2026, marking the franchise’s long-awaited return.
Hell, it’s about time. Over 10 years after StarCraft 2’s final Expansion, Legacy of the Void, Blizzard is finally returning to its beloved space opera franchise. Only this time, it’s not an RTS.
The project, which had been teased and rumored ahead of BlizzCon, is simply titled StarCraft and is set to arrive in 2030.
The trailer announcement featured Terran marines training and eventually fighting waves of Zerg on behalf of Arcturus Mengsk’s Dominion, placing the series before the events of SC2.
StarCraft has largely remained dormant since Blizzard ended development of new paid content for StarCraft 2 in 2020. However, the studio continued to insist that the franchise still had a future.
Blizzard had previously attempted to bring SC outside its RTS roots in the form of StarCraft: Ghost, a third-person stealth title originally announced in 2002.
Former Head of Xbox Phil Spencer was vocal about his love of StarCraft and desire to resurrect the series following Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision-Blizzard. In 2023, then Blizzard President Mike Ybarra said the IP has “insane potential” after Twitch streamer LIRIK requested a new StarCraft game.
