Joe Biden has three days left in office, and now the truth appears to be coming out about exactly what led to his political downfall last summer.
The New York Times published a report on Friday that reveals the significant role then-Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) played in forcing Biden out of the 2024 election in favor of Kamala Harris.
The details confirmed what the guys of the Ruthless podcast first told Megyn at the Republican National Convention in July about the top Dem. On Friday’s show, Megyn was joined by The Daily Mail’s Maureen Callahan to discuss the bombshell report and why it is too little, too late.
What We Knew Then
It was six months ago to the day, back on July 17, that the Ruthless hosts – John Ashbrook, Michael Duncan, Josh Holmes, and Comfortably Smug – joined Megyn live from the RNC and broke the news that Schumer had traveled to Biden’s beach house in Delaware on July 13 for a private meeting in which he urged him to withdraw from the presidential race.
“What we understand is that Chuck Schumer drove himself or was driven to Delaware to have a personal one-on-one meeting with Joe Biden to make his appeal that Biden should not be the nominee,” Ashbrook told Megyn at the time. “They’re trying to steal the nomination from this old man.”
They called the scoop the “worst kept secret” in Milwaukee as journalists did their level best to cover for their Democratic sources. “Every single journalist… knows exactly what happened,” Holmes said. “But they asked Chuck Schumer, and it’s a one-on-one meeting, and he denies it, so they’re not reporting it.”
What We Know Now
Eventually, Schumer confirmed he met with the then-81-year-old president – but not much else. “I sat with President Biden this afternoon in Delaware; we had a good meeting,” Schumer said in a statement.
And now The New York Times has confirmed what Ruthless reported from the beginning. In a piece titled “‘I’m Urging You Not to Run’: How Schumer Pushed Biden to Drop Out” published Friday, the Times details how Schumer and Biden’s 45-minute encounter in Rehoboth Beach went down.
While Schumer was “tired and tense” during his four-hour drive from Brooklyn to Delaware where he planned to make the case that there was no path forward due to waning support among Democratic senators and the voting public, the conversation was apparently both pointed and emotional.
“If you run and you lose to Trump, and we lose the Senate, and we don’t get back the House, that 50 years of amazing, beautiful work goes out the window,” Schumer told Biden, according to the Times. “But worse — you go down in American history as one of the darkest figures.”
“If I were you,” he said, “I wouldn’t run, and I’m urging you not to run.”
Schumer told Biden he figured he only had a 5 percent chance of beating Trump and “none” of his pollsters would disagree. The Times reported that the president only interrupted twice, and it was to ask the same question: “Do you really think Kamala can win?” The majority leader admitted he didn’t know but said she had a far better chance.
Additional Revelations
The Times also seemingly confirmed what has long been rumored about the tensions between Biden and Barack Obama, claiming the former president told Schumer he had to be the one to deliver the message. Obama reportedly believed his former vice president wouldn’t listen to him due to their “fragile relationship.”
What’s more, the meeting between Biden and Schumer was apparently a last ditch effort to force the president aside before things got even nastier. The Times reported that top Dems in the Senate were planning to release a letter calling on Biden to get out of the race.
Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) went so far as to demand Biden be able to secure reports from two neurologists – that would be made public – saying he was fit to serve. He also requested Biden then hold a news conference where anyone could ask him anything.
Too Little, Too Late
While the behind the scenes drama may be fun to read and confirm previously held suspicions, Megyn said it is too little, too late. “Where were these effing reports at the time – never mind before the June debate,” she asked. “There has been no accountability, and there won’t be.”
“The same media who failed to notice that a neurologist came to the White House eight to 10 times over the previous year, didn’t break this story. They didn’t even break the fact that Chuck Schumer met with Biden. Ruthless broke that,” she concluded. “Now… as he is about to leave office and it is too late to 25th Amendment him out of office, we finally get the, ‘We all knew that he can’t put two sentences together. We were demanding neurology reports behind the scenes.'”
