A Louisiana family that should have been preparing a 14-year-old girl for her first day of high school is instead planning her funeral after she was fatally shot by a 13-year-old family friend, police say.
Makayla Pennywell died Sunday after she was shot in the head inside a Shreveport home on Legardy Street, according to the Shreveport Police Department.
Officers responding at about 2.30pm found Pennywell with a gunshot wound to the head. She later died from her injuries, police said.
A 13-year-old boy was arrested shortly afterward and charged with second-degree murder. He is being held at a juvenile detention center as detectives continue investigating the shooting.
Police initially identified the suspect as Pennywell's brother before correcting the record. Authorities later said the boy is not biologically related to the teen but is the son of one of her mother's friends, KTBS reported.
Detectives interviewed several people who were inside the home when the shooting occurred but have not said what led to the gunfire. No motive has been released.
The Caddo Parish District Attorney's Office will determine whether the boy will be prosecuted as an adult.
Pennywell's family told the local outlet that they had been planning to take the teenager back-to-school shopping before her death.

Relatives remembered Pennywell as a kind, calm teenager who loved basketball, cooking and spending time with her siblings.
'We love her. We miss her,' her grandmother told KTBS.
She described Pennywell as 'sweet' and said she 'really went with the flow.'
Another relative added: 'She was a very good kid. It's a tragedy.'
The Caddo Parish School District told KTBS it is preparing grief counselors to support students and staff before the start of the school year.
Police said Pennywell's death was one of two fatal domestic violence-related shootings involving young people in Shreveport over the weekend.
Corporal Chris Bordelon said the cases highlighted an ongoing problem with people using firearms to resolve conflicts.
'In both of these cases, we're seeing individuals going to guns to solve disputes,' Bordelon told the outlet.

'The reality is, in the city limits of Shreveport, you are much more likely to be seriously injured or killed by a relative than you are by a random act of violence.
'That should really drive home the fact that we have a real problem with domestic violence. We have a problem with young people not being able to resolve conflict without violence.'
Shreveport City Councilwoman Tabatha Taylor also expressed condolences following the shooting.
'My hope is that we also recommit ourselves to building a safer community where fewer families have to experience this kind of unimaginable heartbreak,' Taylor said in a statement.
Police said detectives continue to gather evidence and have not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
