A five-year-old is fighting for his life after a parking meter fell on them in Western Australia’s largest regional city.

Paramedics were called to Arthur St in Bunbury, about 106 miles south of Perth, shortly after 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Three crews were sent to the scene before the five-year-old boy was rushed to Bunbury Hospital as a priority one.

The boy is understood to have later been taken by the Royal Flying Doctor Service to Perth’s Children’s Hospital, where he was in a critical condition.

A spokesperson for WorkSafe WA said they had been notified of the incident and an investigator had been sent to the scene.

The spokesperson said the boy had been hit by a disused parking meter in a courtyard at the Bunbury Museum, not the parking area.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, the museum and heritage center said it would be closed until Friday, but did not mention the incident.

“We apologize for any inconvenience and thank our community for their patience and understanding during this period,” they said.

City of Bunbury chief executive Alan Ferris told the ABC the council was working with authorities to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“We are deeply saddened to learn about an incident involving a young child at Bunbury Museum and Heritage Centre yesterday,” he told the national broadcaster.

“We thank police and paramedics who not only helped the child, but museum staff and community members who witnessed the incident and provided immediate assistance.

“Our thoughts are with the child, their family, and all involved and everyone impacted.”

A priority one designation is given by paramedics to call-outs which are assessed as being potentially life-threatening.
