Boy, 8, killed in freak accident at summer camp: ‘Never forgotten’

A Massachusetts boy was killed by a falling tree at a summer day camp — with his heartbroken family remembering him as a “fiercely loyal” kid whose brightness will be “never forgotten.”

Mason Sundberg, 8, was struck by a falling tree on Tuesday morning while attending YMCA Camp Chickami, according the Sudbury Police Department and WCVB.

Sundberg was flown to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, the outlet reported.

The boy’s heartbroken family released a statement through police on Thursday — remembering the Loring Elementary School student as a “goofy” and “fiercely loyal” friend.

“Mason left us yesterday, but his kindness, love, and smile never will. A fiercely loyal, loving, empathetic friend to old friends and new,” his family wrote in the statement.

“Mason was funny, goofy and crazy in all the right ways; he will be remembered for singing and dancing around the house with a wide smile on his face and a skip in his step,” they said.

The young camper also loved video games, sushi, swimming, skiing, his dog named River, “running everywhere, and a good holiday celebration with over-the-top decorations,” the stricken family added.

“He loved to draw and build stories with his friends, a notebook in his bag everywhere he went. His brightness will be missed, but never forgotten to those who loved him,” the statement continued.

The toppled tree also injured a camp employee, who was treated and released from a local hospital after the harrowing incident, WCVB reported.

“The entire West Suburban YMCA family is grieving the loss of a young camper when a tree fell at Camp Chickami in Wayland on Tuesday,” West Suburban YMCA President & CEO Jack Fucci said in a statement to the outlet.

“We are keeping the camper’s family foremost in our thoughts at this extraordinarily difficult time,” Fucci said.
