Key Facts

  • The fixing Brazil’s PTAX fixed at 5.1690 reais per dollar on Monday 14 September, the dollar’s firmest against the real since 31 August and 1.5 percent above Friday’s 5.0918. The spot market closed at 5.1505 (-0.58 percent).
  • The trigger A firmer dollar globally: the DXY index rose 0.42 percent, the yield on 10-year US Treasuries touched 5 percent, and the VIX fear gauge jumped 7.95 percent to 17.1.
  • The stocks The Ibovespa fell 0.91 percent to 185,501 points, led by commodity names: CSN Mineração dropped 6.85 percent and Usiminas 4.74 percent.
  • The decision Copom concludes its two-day meeting on Wednesday 16 September. B3 options put roughly 95 percent odds on a 0.25-point cut of the 14.00 percent Selic to 13.75 percent.
  • The math At Monday’s fixing, US$1,000 buys R$5,169 — R$77 more than on Friday. A R$5,000 rent costs about US$967, down from US$982.

One fixing undid two weeks of patience. On Monday 14 September the PTAX jumped to 5.1690 reais per dollar — the weakest the real has been since 31 August — and every dollar-denominated budget in Brazil quietly grew.

The number came out of Monday’s PTAX auctions: 5.1690 reais per dollar, up 1.5 percent from Friday’s 5.0918 and the dollar’s firmest level against the real since 31 August. The spot market had flagged the move during the session — the real closed at 5.1505, down 0.58 percent on the day — but the fixing is the reference that banks, card networks and rent contracts actually use.

Why the Real Slipped

The proximate cause was not Brazilian. On Monday the yield on 10-year US Treasury bonds touched 5 percent, the DXY dollar index rose 0.42 percent, and the VIX volatility gauge climbed 7.95 percent to 17.1 as investors hedged into the Federal Reserve’s Wednesday decision and dumped technology shares. In that climate, emerging-market currencies are the release valve: the real, Chile’s peso (957.53 this morning), Mexico’s peso (back above 17) and Colombia’s peso (TRM 3,109.3) all weakened together.

Brazil added a local amplifier. The Ibovespa fell 0.91 percent to 185,501 points with commodity names leading the drop — CSN Mineração lost 6.85 percent and Usiminas 4.74 percent — as iron-ore nerves fed straight into the currency. The rotation was not panicked: domestic names such as Totvs (+4.34 percent) and Hypera (+3.38 percent) gained, and the market’s focus remains Wednesday’s Copom conclusion.

What It Means for Your Money

For anyone sending dollars into Brazil, Monday was a gift: at the new PTAX, US$1,000 converts to R$5,169 — R$77 more than Friday’s fixing delivered. A R$5,000 apartment now costs about US$967 a month, down from US$982 on Friday, and the same applies to school fees, health plans and any other real-denominated bill a dollar earner carries. If you earn in reais and pay dollar debts, the direction is uncomfortable: your effective obligations rose about 1.5 percent in a single session.

The temptation is to wait for more. Bear in mind that the move was driven by US yields and pre-Fed positioning rather than Brazilian data — which means it can reverse just as quickly if the Federal Reserve’s tone or the Copom statement on Wednesday surprises. Staging conversions in tranches remains the boring, robust answer.

Copom Eve

Brazil’s Monetary Policy Committee wraps up its two-day meeting on Wednesday 16 September. The Selic stands at 14.00 percent after four straight cuts since June, and B3 options put roughly 95 percent probability on a 0.25-point cut to 13.75 percent; a hold gets about 3.5 percent. The central bank’s own Focus survey sees the Selic ending 2026 at 13.75 percent with inflation at 5.00 percent. Whatever the committee decides, the statement’s tone toward the real’s slide will move the next fixings. For the week’s full rate calendar — including the Fed — see our Fed-and-Copom week standalone.

Why did the real fall on Monday?

Mainly because the dollar rose everywhere. US 10-year Treasury yields touched 5 percent, the DXY index gained 0.42 percent and the VIX jumped 7.95 percent as investors positioned for the Federal Reserve. Brazil-specific pressure added fuel: commodity stocks led the Ibovespa 0.91 percent lower, with CSN Mineração down 6.85 percent. The PTAX fixed at 5.1690, up 1.5 percent from Friday.

Does a Selic cut mean a weaker real?

Not automatically, but often at the margin. Lower rates can narrow the yield advantage that attracts foreign money into Brazilian bonds. On Wednesday the cut to 13.75 percent is nearly fully priced at roughly 95 percent odds, so the currency’s reaction will hinge on the statement’s guidance — and on the Fed’s tone the same week. A cautious Copom could steady the real; a dovish surprise could extend the slide.

Should I convert dollars now or wait until after Copom?

If the transfer is needed this month, staging beats timing: convert a portion now near 5.17 and the rest after Wednesday’s decisions. If the real rebounds on a hawkish surprise, your remaining tranches benefit; if it slides further, your first tranche was already protected. For a US$1,000 monthly budget, Monday’s fixing alone was worth an extra R$77.
