A 22-year-old Brazilian influencer died just days after undergoing breast lift surgery — and her death is reportedly being investigated as a suicide.
The death of Maria Eduarda Alves dos Santos, who had more than 750,000 TikTok followers under the name Duda Alves, was confirmed by loved ones on social media, Gazeta Brasil reported.
Alves built up her following with comedic videos about her pet peeves, describing herself as the “girl who hates things,” as well as posts about her life with her boyfriend, but occasionally touched on more serious topics, CNN Brasil reported.
In her final video, posted six days ago, she talked about undergoing a mastopexy, or breast-lifting procedure designed to reshape sagging breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue.
She had also gone into her procedure in detail in recent weeks, explaining the reasons that led her to have a mastopexy in early September.
Alves explained that, because she is short, her breasts were disproportionate to her height and were causing her back pain.
“I ended up removing half of what I had. It was more of an aesthetic issue, I wanted to wear clothes without a bra, I wanted to have more freedom,” she said, as reported by Hugo Gloss.
She also complained about comments she had received from male followers since undergoing the procedure.
Alves’s friend Sarah Mahdavi confirmed the death on Tuesday and asked for respect and privacy during her time of mourning.
“Duda, besides being my best friend, was my family, my love, and everything more than I could ever imagine,” she wrote on social media. “I ask that you respect the grief we are feeling.
Alves’s cousin, Geovana Alves, 19, also paid tribute.
“I had the privilege of having you in my life for 19 years! They were the best 19 years of my life,” she wrote.
Another friend, Clarissa Pavie, highlighted Alves’s humor and authentic personality.
“She wasn’t just light, she was calmness, authenticity with a touch of dry humor,” she wrote.
Brazilian authorities confirmed that Alves died on Sunday, and said they were investigating her death as a possible suicide, TMZ reported.
A funeral for Alves was held at a church in Sao Paulo on Tuesday, at which her father thanked her fans for the affection they had shown, Hugo Gloss reported.
“She also had, in addition to the love of her parents, the love of her relatives, aunts, cousins, her beloved brother, [and] the love of her friends. And how important that is in our lives. Thank you,” he said.
