One of Donald Trump's more controversial picks for his upcoming cabinet has withdrawn his name from consideration.
Former congressman Matt Gaetz announced on X that he will no longer seek the nomination for attorney general.
I had excellent meetings with Senators yesterday. I appreciate their thoughtful feedback - and the incredible support of so many. While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition. There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus I'll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General. Trump's DOJ must be in place and ready on Day 1.
I remain fully committed to see that Donald J. Trump is the most successful President in history. I will forever be honored that President Trump nominated me to lead the Department of Justice and I'm certain he will Save America.
Trump's nomination of Gaetz was controversial from the start. Gaetz has had a reputation as a disruptor, which was a primary reason that Trump picked him.
Trump released a statement on Truth Social:
I greatly appreciate the recent efforts of Matt Gaetz in seeking approval to be Attorney General. He was doing very well but, at the same time, did not want to be a distraction for the Administration, for which he has much respect. Matt has a wonderful future, and I look forward to watching all of the great things he will do!
One of Gaetz's biggest problems was the rumor of a looming sex scandal that he couldn't shake. Despite the lack of credibility to many of the accusations, it wasn't a good look for the former Florida congressman. Rightly or wrongly, the reputation that comes with these types of allegations would

I said from the beginning that the Gaetz nomination was a ploy. Trump is playing 5-D chess.

Big win for the Harriz/Walzee administration. Trump hasn’t even taken the reins yet and the asskicking has already started. The GOOBS need to stop handling the RATS with kid gloves. Treat them like we were treated the last three years.

Let’s see. Who’s even more of a junkyard Rottweiler than Gaetz?

Why did he embarrass President Trump by accepting it in the first place? He should have told the President that he had more luggage than Sammy Brinton. Big win for the RATS.

I am afraid this will give the rats and establishment encouragement to go after other picks such as: Gabbard, Kennedy, Hegseth,....
they want to replace them with Bill Barr, Haley types.

I like Ken Paxton to replace Gaetz as the AG nominee.
I like Gaetz as a Senate appointee to replace Rubio.
I’d like Kari Lake to get in there will something good.

Yeah I mean honestly this was for the best..I like Gaetz but who needs the drama, does anyone remember the Kavanaugh hearings, did you all want that again times 10,000..Trump is most likely going to pick Andrew Bailey who is a solid choice, liked by everyone, Nicole Shanahan wrote a tweet back on Nov 12th backing him, so lets see what happens
To: FlingWingFlyer
Trump knew about his baggage and nominated him anyway so who knows what he has up his sleeve..everyone knew about the ethics report it was no big secret
To: Sacajaweau
Or is he going to be one of those Recess appointments which is for two years.

That's a shame because America's Domestic Enemies will consider this a "win" and it will further embolden their fight. I would rather they were thoroughly disenfranchised and turn on each other in an attempt to be the first rats off the sinking ship. But make no mistake, their ship is going to sink.
