Brentford battled back from two goals down and scored a dramatic late winner in a thrilling 4-3 Premier League defeat of Ipswich Town at the Brentford Community Stadium on Saturday.
George Hirst became the first Ipswich player since Marcus Bent in January 2002 to record a goal and an assist in a single Premier League game in the first half, teeing up Sam Szmodics before scoring himself a few minutes later.
But Brentford scored twice in quick succession at the end of the first half, as Yoane Wissa rounded off a flowing move to pull one back before playing a decisive role in Harry Clarke’s own goal.
Clarke then conceded a penalty early in the second half, from which Bryan Mbeumo scored, and the Ipswich defender completed his nightmare hat-trick by getting sent off in the 69th minute for a second booking.
Despite that, Ipswich thought they’d secured a point with 86 minutes on the clock, Liam Delap prodding home his fifth league goal of the season from a Leif Davis cross.
But another delivery from out wide at the other end decided the game; Mbeumo’s teasing cross from deep evaded everyone and went in, taking him to eight goals for the season and just one off his personal best in a full Premier League campaign.
It was the first time Brentford have come back to win a Premier League game in which they’ve trailed by at least two goals, while Ipswich remain winless.
