Actor Brian Cox, 78, has come under for suggesting female Donald Trump voters had a "lack of awareness" about what opting for the Republican candidate would mean.

In November last year, Trump saw off Democrat opponent Kamala Harris in a landslide victory in the USA, cementing his spot for a second term as President.

On Monday, January 20, Trump will officially be sworn into office and take over from Joe Biden at his inauguration.

The event takes place at the US Capitol in Washington DC and both Donald and his Vice-President JD Vance will take part in swearing-in ceremonies at 12:00pm local time, where they take the oath of office.

While millions of Trump voters will undoubtedly be overjoyed to see the man they voted for take office, Cox isn't best pleased.

The Scottish-born Succession star, who splits his time between the UK and the US, unleashed a blistering take on the inauguration - and its supposed impact on the female voters in the US.

Cox said: "The thing that worries me more than anything else is how women are being treated, how the women are being marginalised in America.

"We've seen it with the defeat of Hilary (Clinton). We've certainly seen it with the defeat of Kamala (Harris).

"And that has really made a problem, where do women fit in within that society? Women are fighting for their own rights, you know, the whole abortion issue...

"So I just feel very strongly there's a real anti-feminist thing going on," he said to presenters Richard Madeley and Susanna Reid.

Madeley quickly pointed out, however: "But women voted for him - in their millions!"

Cox conceded: "Well, they do! And that's the problem, they don't realise. It's the lack of awareness that baffles me."

Continuing his point, he told GMB viewers: "The lack of awareness that this man who is a convicted criminal, who is a liar, who is a known liar, has been trusted as the President of the United States.

"It doesn't make any sense," he added in exasperation.

While Cox may have thought he was sticking up for women in America, the 78-year-old appeared to hit the wrong chord with several viewers watching at home who took issue with his tone and comments.

After the ITV show shared a clip of the conversation on its X page, the comments were almost unanimous in their condemnation of Cox's "patronising" stance.

Brian Cox has been slammed for his Trump voter comments

"Listen to Brian telling women they didn't know what they voted for..." one X user began with a laughing emoji. "Going to give them a little pat on the head too, so you can really patronise them?"

A second echoed: "Loved the patronising comment that women’s ‘lack of awareness’ made them vote for trump. This old snob also pushes for Scottish independence from his Hollywood base. He has no idea what is going on in the real world and he doesn’t care."

Meanwhile, a third hit out: "Why do actors have to ruin their work by thinking anyone cares what their political beliefs are?? There so many actors work I can't now watch because they spoil it by idiotic mouthpieces for the far-left

"Oh a man telling women they are thick. How wonderful," a fourth sarcastically weighed in before a fifth diplomatically weighed in: "Great actor but disagreed with everything else he said! Sometimes it really is better to stick to the day job although we're all entitled to an opinion!" (sic)
