The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has provided updated travel information for holidaymakers heading to Greece.

This comes as extreme weather has hit parts of the country and could continue this summer.

Flash flooding and storms have battered the Greek islands of Crete and Rhodes, with seven people rescued from floodwater.

The islands of Santorini (Thira), Anafi, Ios and Amorgos experienced increased seismic activity in early 2025.

The FCDO said: "Greece can experience extreme natural phenomena such as earthquakes, wildfires, extreme heat and flash floods. To be alerted to events near where you are located in Greece, register for alerts from the Greek government's Emergency Communication Service (in English)."

To register for alerts on iPhones, users should go to Settings, then Notifications, and enable the "Emergency Alerts" option.

Android 11 and higher users can access this via Settings, Notifications, Advanced Settings, and Wireless Emergency Alerts.

Samsung device owners should navigate to Settings, Apps, Messages, Notifications, Emergency Notifications and enable the relevant option.

The FCDO recommended following 112 Greece on X for official updates during emergencies.

For additional guidance, visitors can access the Greek Ministry of Civil Protection website, which offers comprehensive earthquake preparation information in English.

An interactive map showing emergency assembly points throughout Greece is available at mysafetyplan.gov.gr, though the text appears in Greek.

Tourists planning a summer holiday should be aware of the increased risk of wildfires across Greece.

The FCDO said: "Ensure that your mobile phone is registered to receive emergency alerts to be warned of wildfires near your location.

"Wildfires are highly dangerous and unpredictable. The situation can change quickly. Causing a wildfire or a forest fire is a criminal offence in Greece – even if unintentional. If you see a fire, call the emergency services on 112."

To prevent starting fires, visitors should properly dispose of litter, especially glass, which can ignite fires.

Cigarettes should be fully extinguished, and barbecues should not be lit in vulnerable areas.
