California freeway hell as two people ejected sparking lane closures through rush hour

Two people were killed after being ejected in a deadly crash on the 5 Freeway early Thursday, with lane closures disrupting the rush hour commute.

The grisly smash on an off-ramp on the southbound side in Anaheim led to heavy traffic as drivers tried to get to work.

The California Highway Patrol incident log lists the crash at 3:15 a.m. near Lincoln Avenue. The log details a haunting initial interaction with first responders, as a male is heard “possibly crying” on a call for help right after the crash. CHP decided to send medical personnel to assist.

CHP believes a white SUV was traveling at high speed and went down into the right shoulder into the roadside area. Investigators believe the vehicle missed an exit and flew off the side of the freeway. Two of the four people in the car were ejected.

The two injured people were taken to the hospital in unknown condition, the Metro Cities Fire Authority told ABC 7.

Video from ABC 7’s Air7 showed a vehicle in the grassy embankment area along the freeway.

Traffic has been snarled in the area, and CHP issued a SigAlert with the closure of two southbound lanes.

As of 7:52 a.m., the roadway closure was canceled after nearly three hours.
