California hiking hotspot that attracts millions — shutting down for more than a year for major makeover

A popular San Diego hiking destination is getting a makeover and will close for construction starting Monday, Sept. 21, according to California State Parks.

Torrey Pines Lodge and its hiking trails, which draw about four million visitors each year, are undergoing a significant renovation.

The first phase of construction began last November and ended in February. The work included replacing underground sewer, electrical and telecommunications lines, as well as the complete demolition of an old restroom.

The second phase of the project will begin Monday and is expected to be completed by early 2027.

“This closure will allow State Parks to continue utility improvements, such as installing new gas, water, wastewater and communication lines, as well as accessibility upgrades, including updated accessible parking stalls and an accessible pedestrian path from the upper parking lot to the restroom and Lodge,” California State Parks said in a statement.

Tom Brotherton, a longtime hiker from Laguna Beach who frequently visits Torrey Pines, told CBS he supports the renovation.

“I just love this place. I’ve been coming here for 40 plus 45 years,” he said.

Brotherton told the station the upgrades were necessary, even if the closure affects his life.

“I’m bummed, but they gotta put in the bathrooms. They’ve been trying to do that for the last 30 years, 20 years,” he said.

The trailhead currently has multiple portable restrooms around the lodge.

But that will soon change, as part of the upgrades will include a permanent restroom connected to sewer and water lines, according to California State Parks.

Trish Hess, who also frequently visits Torrey Pines, said she supports the construction as well.

“I think it’s a great trade-off—shut it down for a bit, get the work done, make it look more beautiful, especially for visitors coming to San Diego,” she told CBS.

South Beach, North Beach and Torrey Pines State Beach will remain open during construction.
