‘California Street’ naming goes drastically wrong as city worker gives priceless two-word reaction

Someone needs spell check.

A brand new shiny street sign was caught in a terrible spelling error in Denver, CO — shortly after being hung.

The sign, which should have read California Street, instead spelled “Califorina” — disappointing every Golden State transplant and their mothers.

What’s worse, is that the embarrassing typo was on both sides of the sign — for all drivers to see.

The sign was located at the 19th Street intersection in downtown Denever and was taken down Tuesday afternoon to be corrected and replaced.

The Denver Department of Transportation & Infrastructure (DOTI) told Westword that the sparkling mishap will be replaced Wednesday.

An unnamed man driving a DOTI-branded car near the sign was heard by a Westword reporter saying, “S–-t happens.”

The transport department said the incorrect sign was installed on Monday, August 17, while the other man driving the DOTI vehicle told the news outlet it was installed on Friday, August 14.

Either way, any amount of time to display such a glaring error is proving to be quite embarrassing for the Mile High City.

According to the DOTI, the sign was manufactured and installed by a contractor, not the city.

While the sign cost $321.75 to fabricate, the city says it will not be charged an additional fee to fix the error.

“We will not be charged for the removal, replacement or reinstallation due to the error,” a department spokesperson Cyndi Karvaski told the outlet.

The sign gave way to a comments storm on social media with folks blasting the comical error.

“They hung it? How many people saw that sign and didn’t question it?” one user wrote.

“Califorina, meet Coloroad,” another commented.

A third chimed in and said, “Should’ve left it be. A quirky reminder that this still isn’t California.”

Another wrote, “Must be ordering their signage from the Learing Center in Minnesota.” Referring to the mishap back in 2025 after the day care facility sign meant to state “Quality Learning Center.”
