Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) is facing pushback on social media for an apparent “lie under oath” moment after he addressed the contentious Senate confirmation hearing for incoming attorney general Pam Bondi.  After Schiff shared an interview with MSNBC claiming Bondi refused to “upset Trump,” some users called for the representative to be held accountable for alleged misrepresentations of the truth.

Schiff was asked during the interview, “This is your first Senate confirmation hearing. What did you learn about this process today?”  He began, “Well, the way it has, I guess, devolved, is you try to say as little as possible during your confirmation. You try to be as generic as you possibly can. Don’t give any specifics, don’t commit yourself to anything,” he said.

Calling out Pam Bondi, the California Democrat added, “And in this case, the cardinal rule was, do not say anything to upset Donald Trump.”  He argued that Bondi refused to state that President-elect Trump lost the 2020 election and wouldn’t take the January 6 investigation seriously to please the incoming president with his agenda.

He continued, “So using that standard, she couldn’t say who won the 2020 election. She couldn’t say whether there was massive fraud affecting the outcome of the election. She couldn’t say that she would even preserve the evidence in the January 6 investigation, she couldn’t even make that commitment. She couldn’t make any commitment that she thought Donald Trump might not like.”

Expressing concern about the Supreme Court’s ruling on presidential immunity, he added, “And after this Supreme Court decision that gives him essentially immunity to commit crimes, absolute when it comes to the Justice Department, to have an attorney general who can’t say no to him, can’t even tell him unpleasant truths, like you lost the election in 2020 Mr. President, that’s a prescription for disasters.”

Numerous conservatives reacted to the video Schiff said, pushing back on his claims.  Conservative commentator Gunther Eagleman commented, “I hope Pam Bondi locks you up first.  Lie under oath, go to jail.”  Conservatives have raised numerous concerns about Schiff telling the truth, including allegations that he misrepresented the Hunter Biden laptop scandal in the 2020 election and his role in the Russia collusion Hoax.

In 2023, Rep. Harriet Hageman excoriated Schiff over his “lies” and wasted “millions” of taxpayer dollars in an attempt to “delegitimize” the 2016 election.  She said, “To make matters worse, this representative perpetuated these lies while he was chair of the House Intel Committee, and consistently implied, if not outright, stated, that he had inside information in that capacity. He lied about how the FBI and DOJ obtained and renewed a FISA warrant. The FBI and DOJ officials did not omit material, material information from the FISA warrant, how the DOJ used the Steelie Dossier, what was collected via the FISA warrant, the FBI is vetting process for the Steele dossier that he had an alleged smoking gun showing that President Trump colluded with with with Russia. And of each of these claims has proven to be false.”

Concern about Schiff with the Hunter Biden laptop story was demonstrated when John Ratcliffe, Trump’s nominee for DIA Director, called out Schiff during his confirmation.  He said, “In 2020, when a chairman of an intelligence committee misrepresented that a laptop owned by then-candidate Biden’s son was somehow a Russian intelligence operation and 51 former intelligence officials use the imprimatur of IC authority to to go along with that, I stood in the breach.”

“I stood alone and told the American people the truth about that,” he added. Ratcliffe continued to argue that his record shows that he will serve his role with unquestionable integrity, regardless of how challenging the task is. “So I think my record in terms of speaking truth to power and defending the intelligence community and its good work is very clear.”

He continued, “And what I can assure you is, those types of instances, if I’m in that position that CIA director and have to do that again, as uncomfortable as that can be to be accused. The truth will ultimately defend itself, and I think that intelligence will as.” Ratcliffe was also applauded for various other remarks he delivered in his confirmation hearing.
