Canadian music icon Joni Mitchell proudly became an American citizen after moving to the US in the mid-1960s.
The 82-year-old singer shared a photo of herself standing beside the American flag, along with a video clip from her citizenship ceremony, in a Tuesday Instagram post captioned, “A journey that began 62 years ago.”
Mitchell, who was originally born in Canada, can now cast her vote in American elections, something she had previously stated she wished she could do.
Mitchell married American folk singer Chuck Mitchell in 1965 and moved with him to Detroit. Their marriage ended about two years later, but by then, she had begun building a following on the American folk music circuit.
Mitchell released her debut album, Song to a Seagull, in 1968 and later settled in Los Angeles’ Laurel Canyon, where she wrote Ladies of the Canyon. The album went gold in 1970.
She continued residing in Santa Barbara, California. (RELATED: Jerry Seinfeld Jokes He’s ‘Into’ Genocide During Heated Confrontation With Pro-Palestinian Protesters)
