Convicted child sex abuser and killer Kevin Underwood has been executed by the state of Oklahoma for murdering Jamie Rose Bolin in 2006 as part of a cannibalistic fantasy.

The execution was carried out on Thursday morning using lethal injection at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester and he was pronounced dead at 10.14am, according to KOCO

The state uses a three-drug lethal injection process that begins with the sedative midazolam followed by a second drug that paralyzes the inmate to halt their breathing and a third that stops their heart.

He became the state's fourth and the nation's 25th execution this year.

Underwood's last meals requests were chicken-fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, pinto beans, a hot roll and a cheeseburger with fries and ketchup, according to USA Today

Several members of the Bolin's family were expected to witness the execution.

Underwood, who was put to death on his 45th birthday, had admitted to luring Jamie into his apartment and beating her over the head with a cutting board before suffocating and sexually assaulting her.

He told investigators that he nearly beheaded the girl in his bathtub before abandoning his plans to eat her.

Bolin was discovered two days later in Underwood's apartment, hidden in his closet in the plastic tub.

Last week he made a last ditch attempt to be spared which was ultimately rejected.

'Although I do not want to die, I recognize that I deserve to for what I did,' he told the court. 'If my death could change what I did, I would gladly die.

'I would like to apologize to the victim's family to my own family and to everyone in that room who had to hear the horrible details of what I did.'

The youngster's grieving family also spoke at the clemency hearing arguing against mercy for Underwood.

'How dare you, Kevin Underwood, ask for clemency. How dare you look at the courts, look at Jamie's family, then ask that of us,' Bolin's sister Lori Pate said.

'You, Kevin Underwood, expect us to forgive. You want us to forgive the fact that you intended on trying to consumer her.

'You beat her like an animal and raped her. You deserve the original sentence and all the things that have come upon you.

'You showed me at the age of 14 that monsters are not just something made up from story books. They wear our same clothing and walk on our same streets.'

Underwood's lawyers claimed that his crimes were due to his mental health issues

Underwood's attorneys had attempted to argue that he should be spared and blamed his heinous crimes on mental health struggles and a pornography addiction.

But three board members voted unanimously against recommending clemency, and the final decision is left to Governor Kevin Stitt.

'I am pleased the board voted to deny clemency for this deeply evil monster and ensured that justice will be delivered for Jamie Rose Bolin,' State Attorney General Genter Drummond said.

'Jamie’s family has waited 18 excruciating years for justice that finally will be carried out when this murderer is executed.'

Underwood's attorneys also argued that he deserved to be spared from death because of his long history of abuse and serious mental health issues that included autism, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bipolar and panic disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, schizotypal personality disorder and various deviant sexual paraphilias.

'Whatever deviance of the mind led Underwood to abduct, beat, suffocate, sexually abuse and nearly decapitate Jamie cannot be laid at the feet of depression, anxiety or (autism),' prosecutors wrote in their opposition to Underwood's clemency request.

'Underwood is dangerous because he is smart, organized and driven by deviant sexual desires rooted in the harm and abuse of others.'
